PowerCommander Install
by
Travis Whitmore (Tee Dub) Well, I finally
installed my Power Commander. It was a complete pain. I bought it from
Clifford cycles. The unit is made for a 998, but programmed for our
bikes. The difficult part is, the directions & pictures were also
written for a 998, Jim from Clifford cycles makes little addendums to
the directions so it fits a Multistrada, but they aren't crystal clear.
I had a hard time figuring out how to get the plugs off the injectors.
Cliffords says it isn't neccesary to remove the tank to do this job, but
I don't see how anyone could get to the injector for the rear cylinder
without removing the tank. Once you figure out what goes where, then the
process isn't too bad. I would have to say the most difficult part
(apart from disassembling the bike) was removing the stock plugs from
the injectors.
I also at this time used a dremel tool the open up the holes in the
airbox. They are now cut out square to the edges of the stock openings.
Once I reassembled the bike I thought I'd start it, even though I have
yet to set the TPS. Setting the TPS is something I didn't know I'd have
to do. Unfortunately it requires taking your computer to your bike and
hooking it up to the PCIII usb. I'm not about to haul my desktop system
out to the garage, so I will have to borrow a laptop from a friend to do
this task. So, anyway, I go to start her up and nothing. Lights power
on, power commander powered on, fuel pump priming, but nothing, nada,
zip zero! I figured the system might need more priming, who knows. I
tried two more times, then voila, ITS ALIVE!!! I didn't ride it, and I
probably let it run a bit too long, since it is 11:00pm here and my
neighbors are pretty close!
I will attempt to set the TPS tomorrow and give her a test ride, I will
report more later.
